Chapter 1, Page 27: Eggshells
Devere is very good at making this child cry without trying. XD BUT it’s more that Knell just really doesn’t want to talk about what happened and is getting uncomfortable at even the smallest holes being poked in her story. Her still being a bit intimidated by Devere is just the icing on the cake.

Devere continues to question Knell while Knell remains pensive.
Devere (off screen): Why my house?
Knell: I'm sorry, it w-was just the closest.
Devere: To get out of the rain.
Knell: Uh-huh.
Devere, still in his rocking chair, gestures with both of his hands while looking confused.
Devere: And you chose to take shelter under my porch... in the mud?
Knell shuts her eyes, which are welling with tears, and yells, reaching her limit on the questioning.
Knell: I-I didn't want to be seen, okay?!
Devere looks shocked by her outburst.
Knell is now crying.
Knell: I d-dunno what else to tell you, Mr. Stroud. I didn't hurt nothin', I swear...
She mutters the last sentence more quietly.
Devere sits in silence as Knell cries softly on the nook bed, still holding her bowl of soup.
Devere: ....
Knell: *sniffle*
Devere: Just "Devere" will do.
Knell looks up sadly at Devere, who broke the silence.
Devere looks on at her with a softer, rather regretful expression.
Devere: And you... don't need to be so afraid of me, you know.
Devere looks away and waves his hand dismissively. Knell seems to have stopped crying but is still looking sad and uncomfortable.
Devere: Hff... it's none of my affair what you were doin'. All that's left for me to do is to get you to your folks.
